Pathogen Information
Salmonella Abortusovis is a bacterial pathogen that primarily infects sheep, causing a disease called ovine brucellosis or enzootic abortion of ewes (EAE). This disease can have a significant impact on the sheep industry, leading to reduced viability and reproductive failure in affected animals.
Salmonella Abortusovis is a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family within the phylum Proteobacteria. These bacteria are gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, non-spore-forming rods shaped like short straight sticks, approximately 0.5-1.5 µm long and 0.2-0.5 µm wide. They are motile and possess peritrichous flagella, and they may also secrete fimbriae to adhere to host cells.
The surface of Salmonella Abortusovis is composed of various proteins, including O and H antigens, which play a crucial role in immune evasion and host invasion. The O antigen is a component of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a complex molecule that covers the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria. LPS is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the bacterial cell wall and is recognized by host immune cells as a pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP). The H antigen, on the other hand, is a protein flagellin that makes up the bacterial flagella, allowing the bacterium to move around and invade host cells more effectively.
Sheep are the primary host of Salmonella Abortusovis, but the pathogen can also infect other ruminant species such as goats and cattle. The disease caused by Salmonella Abortusovis in sheep, EAE, is characterized by reproductive failures such as abortions, stillbirths, and weak newborn lambs. The pathogen is usually transmitted from infected ewes to their fetuses or newborns via the placenta or milk. Infection can also occur through contaminated feed, water, or bedding materials.
The diagnosis of Salmonella Abortusovis infection in sheep can be challenging due to the similarity of its symptoms to other diseases such as chlamydiosis and toxoplasmosis. Serological tests such as the Rose Bengal plate agglutination test (RBPT), the complement fixation test (CFT), and the indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) are commonly used to detect antibodies against Salmonella Abortusovis in sheep serum. Nucleic acid-based diagnostic methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR (qPCR) can detect DNA from Salmonella Abortusovis in various samples, including milk, blood, and fetal tissues. These diagnostic methods can target specific genes such as invA, which encodes an invasion protein, and ompA, which encodes an outer membrane protein.
In conclusion, Salmonella Abortusovis is a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, non-spore-forming rod-shaped bacterium that primarily infects sheep, causing ovine brucellosis or EAE. The pathogen's surface proteins, O and H antigens, play a crucial role in immune evasion and host invasion. Diagnosis of Salmonella Abortusovis infection can be challenging due to the similarity of its symptoms to other diseases, but serological and nucleic acid-based diagnostic methods are available to detect the pathogen in various samples.
