Target/Biomarker Information
Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) in dogs (canines) is a glycoprotein biomarker that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules. This protein plays a multifaceted role in both normal physiology and disease states. During fetal development, CEA is actively produced and is involved in crucial cell adhesion processes, promoting tissue formation and integrity. However, in healthy adult dogs, CEA is typically present at very low levels.
The structure of CEA is characterized by multiple immunoglobulin-like domains, making it adept at facilitating cell adhesion. Its primary function is to mediate interactions between cells, ensuring proper tissue organization during embryonic growth. In adult dogs, CEA's expression is significantly reduced but can become elevated in certain pathological conditions.
