    Target/Biomarker Information

Canine GFAP, or Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein, stands as a sentinel within the intricate realm of canine neurobiology. This protein, primarily residing in astrocytes within the central nervous system (CNS) of dogs, plays multifaceted roles in maintaining the structural and functional integrity of the nervous system.

Structurally, Canine GFAP is a member of the intermediate filament protein family, sharing genetic and functional homology with its counterparts in diverse species, including humans. Astrocytes, the primary cellular reservoir of GFAP, rely on this protein for structural support and cytoskeletal integrity. Canine GFAP filaments form a complex network within astrocytes, contributing to their resilience and capacity to respond to various challenges.

Functionally, Canine GFAP is instrumental in astrocyte-mediated processes that support neuronal health. Astrocytes nourish neurons, regulate synaptic transmission, modulate neurotransmitter levels, and maintain the blood-brain barrier. Canine GFAP actively participates in these functions, ensuring the optimal functioning of the CNS.

However, the significance of Canine GFAP extends beyond its structural and homeostatic roles. In response to CNS injury, neuroinflammation, or neurodegenerative conditions, astrocytes undergo a transformative process known as astrogliosis. During astrogliosis, astrocytes become activated, leading to increased expression of GFAP. This upregulation serves as a protective and reparative response, as astrocytes encapsulate injured areas, isolate toxic substances, and support neuronal recovery.
