Target/Biomarker Information
IFNγ, or Interferon-gamma, is a multifunctional cytokine that holds a central position in the immune response of dogs (canines). This cytokine, primarily produced by immune cells like T cells, natural killer cells, and antigen-presenting cells, plays a pivotal role in the immune system's response to infections, particularly those caused by intracellular pathogens, including viruses.
Structurally, IFNγ is a small protein that exerts its effects by binding to specific cell surface receptors on target cells. Upon binding, it initiates a complex signaling cascade that culminates in the activation of various immune effector functions. In the context of dogs, IFNγ's primary role is to activate macrophages, enhancing their ability to recognize, engulf, and eliminate infected cells. This immune cascade is a critical component of the host defense against viral infections and other intracellular pathogens.
