It belongs to the α-defensin family, a group of small cationic peptides renowned for their potent antimicrobial properties.     The production and secretion of α-defensin 5 primarily occur within specialized cells called Paneth cells. These cells are strategically located in the crypts of Lieberkühn in the small intestine, where they contribute significantly to maintaining intestinal health and defending against potential microbial threats.

    Structurally, α-defensin 5 boasts a unique configuration of cysteine residues that form disulfide bonds. These bonds not only confer structural stability but also enhance its antimicrobial activity.
