Target/Biomarker Information
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) in cats, often referred to as a critical enzymatic component of the innate immune system, is primarily located within the neutrophils, a specialized subset of white blood cells. Neutrophils are the body's rapid response team against invading pathogens, and MPO plays an instrumental role in their antimicrobial arsenal.
Structurally, MPO is a heme-containing enzyme, featuring iron atoms at its core. When neutrophils detect the presence of microbial invaders, they deploy MPO into the surrounding environment as part of the immune defense. MPO's primary mission is to catalyze the conversion of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and chloride ions (Cl-) into hypochlorous acid (HOCl). HOCl is a highly potent and reactive antimicrobial agent, capable of rapidly neutralizing a diverse array of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
MPO's antimicrobial prowess is multifaceted. It generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide, which are toxic to pathogens. Additionally, it promotes the conversion of chloride ions into hypochlorous acid, further enhancing the neutrophils' ability to eliminate invaders.
