Target/Biomarker Information
Procalcitonin (PCT) serves as a biomarker of growing significance in feline medicine, primarily linked to the presence of bacterial infections. While PCT's role as a precursor to calcitonin, a hormone regulating calcium levels in the body, is relatively minor in cats, its utility as a marker for bacterial infections is substantial.
In felines exposed to bacterial pathogens, the immune system responds by producing PCT. Importantly, PCT levels rise significantly in response to severe and systemic bacterial infections, making it a valuable tool for diagnosis and management. This elevation occurs because PCT production is tightly regulated, and its release is minimal under normal conditions. However, when the body encounters bacterial invaders, especially those that lead to systemic infections, PCT production escalates rapidly.
Measurement of PCT in cats is typically accomplished through blood tests. By quantifying PCT levels, veterinarians gain a specific and sensitive means to identify bacterial infections, distinguish them from other causes of inflammation, and tailor treatment strategies accordingly.
