Paratuberculosis is a chronic intestinal disease, caused by Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis, that primarily affects ruminants and camelids. Animals usually become infected early in life, many become asymptomatic chronic carriers. M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis can infect animals other than its usual hosts, but the significance of these infections is still mostly unclear. This organism has been proposed to have a causative role in Crohn’s disease, a chronic enteric disease of humans.
