Predominantly nestled within the thyroid gland, TPO conducts an intricate symphony of enzymatic reactions that are the foundation of thyroid hormone synthesis. TPO's core function centers on its catalytic mastery, culminating in the iodination of tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, a substantial glycoprotein produced by thyroid follicular cells. This process forms the essence of thyroid hormone production. By facilitating the iodination of specific tyrosine residues, TPO instigates the creation of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), two thyroid hormones that exercise commanding authority over metabolic pathways, energy utilization, thermoregulation, growth, and a myriad of physiological functions in cattle.
