Target/Biomarker Information
Feline Apolipoprotein E, more commonly referred to as Feline ApoE, is a multifaceted protein that takes center stage in the intricate realm of feline physiology. Synthesized predominantly in the liver of domestic cats (Felis catus), this glycoprotein exhibits structural uniqueness due to the presence of carbohydrates attached to its polypeptide chain. As a distinguished member of the apolipoprotein family, Feline ApoE plays a pivotal role in regulating lipid metabolism, with a particular emphasis on cholesterol management within the feline body.
The significance of Feline ApoE becomes most apparent in its association with high-density lipoproteins (HDL), widely recognized as "good cholesterol." HDL particles serve as molecular transporters for cholesterol and lipids in the bloodstream, and at the core of their functionality lies Feline ApoE. This biomarker is an indispensable component of HDLs, contributing not only to their structural integrity but also to their dynamic role in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway.
The choreography of cholesterol transport begins when Feline ApoE binds to lipids, effectively transforming nascent HDL particles into active carriers of excess cholesterol. These HDLs venture into peripheral tissues, retrieving surplus cholesterol and lipids, and then embark on a journey back to the liver. In the liver, cholesterol undergoes metabolism and eventual excretion, thereby ensuring the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels within the feline body.
