    Pathogen

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a bacterium that causes respiratory diseases in pigs. It belongs to the class Mollicutes, which includes organisms that have a small genome and lack cell walls made of peptidoglycan. As a result, they are structurally different from other bacteria and are classified as part of the phylum Tenericutes.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a pathogenic organism that can cause infections in pigs of all ages. The bacterium is transmitted through direct contact between infected and uninfected animals or through contaminated aerosols. Pigs can also become infected if they consume feed or water contaminated with the bacterium.

Once Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae enters the pig’s respiratory tract, it colonizes the cilia of the trachea and bronchi, leading to inflammation and damage to the respiratory tissues. This damage results in decreased lung function and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections. The bacterium can survive for several weeks in the environment and can persist in pig herds for long periods.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae mainly infects pigs, causing respiratory disease known as porcine enzootic pneumonia (PEP). Other conditions caused by this pathogen include porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) and swine respiratory disease (SRD).

Porcine Enzootic Pneumonia (PEP) is one of the most common respiratory diseases in pigs worldwide. It is a chronic disease that results in reduced growth rate, increased mortality, and decreased feed efficiency. The clinical signs of PEP include coughing, labored breathing, and poor weight gain. In severe cases, pigs may become emaciated due to the inability to eat properly.

Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (PRDC) is a multifactorial respiratory disease that involves several pathogens, including Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. The disease can cause significant losses in pig production and has become a major challenge for the swine industry. PRDC presents with clinical signs such as coughing, sneezing, fever, and dyspnea.

Swine Respiratory Disease (SRD) is caused by several respiratory pathogens, including Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. The disease can result in significant financial losses due to reduced productivity, increased medication costs, and mortality. Clinical signs of SRD include coughing, nasal discharge, fever, and poor appetite.

Diagnostic methods such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Indirect Hemagglutination Test (IHT), and Complement Fixation Test (CFT) are used to identify Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections. PCR is a highly sensitive and specific method that amplifies molecular targets such as 16S rRNA and P97 genes. ELISA is a serological assay that detects antibodies against M. hyopneumoniae surface antigens, while IHT and CFT detect the presence of bacterial antigens in serum.

In conclusion, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a pathogen that causes significant respiratory disease in pigs, leading to economic losses in the swine industry. The identification and control of this bacterium require a thorough understanding of its pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment.
