    Target/Biomarker Information

Canine p-tau181, the phosphorylated Tau Protein 181 variant specific to dogs, represents a molecular sentinel that resides within the intricate neural landscape of man's best friend. At its core, it is a Tau protein that has undergone a precise biochemical modification – phosphorylation – at residue 181. Tau proteins are typically associated with the stabilization of microtubules, essential components of the neuronal cytoskeleton, ensuring proper intracellular transport and structural integrity of axons.

However, in the context of neurodegenerative diseases, the narrative takes a different turn. Phosphorylation events can lead to the misfolding and aggregation of Tau proteins. Canine p-tau181 is no exception, as it tends to aggregate and form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) within the neural tissues of affected dogs.

These NFTs, akin to those observed in human neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, are a pathological hallmark of several neurodegenerative conditions in dogs. The aggregation of p-tau181 in NFTs contributes to the progressive neuronal dysfunction and cognitive decline seen in conditions such as canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CCDS) and specific forms of encephalopathy.
