    Target/Biomarker information

Canine p-tau217, the phosphorylated Tau Protein 217 variant specific to dogs, represents a molecular sentinel that resides within the complex neural landscape of our canine companions. At its core, it is a Tau protein that has undergone a precise biochemical modification – phosphorylation – specifically at residue 217. Tau proteins are typically involved in the stabilization of microtubules within neuronal cells, ensuring proper intracellular transport and the structural integrity of axons. However, in the context of neurodegenerative diseases, the narrative takes a different turn. Phosphorylation events can lead to the misfolding and aggregation of Tau proteins, and canine p-tau217 is no exception. It tends to aggregate and form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) within the neural tissues of affected dogs. These NFTs, reminiscent of those observed in human neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, are a pathological hallmark of various neurodegenerative conditions in dogs. The aggregation of p-tau217 in NFTs contributes to progressive neuronal dysfunction, cognitive decline, and motor disturbances, as seen in conditions such as canine Alzheimer's disease and specific encephalopathies.
