    Target/Biomarker Information

Equine p-tau181, the phosphorylated Tau Protein 181 variant specific to horses, is a beacon within the intricate landscape of equine neurobiology. At its core, it is a Tau protein that has undergone precise phosphorylation at residue 181. Under normal circumstances, Tau proteins serve as the guardians of microtubule stability within neuronal cells, ensuring proper intracellular transport and the structural integrity of axons.

However, when neurodegenerative processes take center stage, the narrative evolves. Phosphorylation events can trigger the misfolding and aggregation of Tau proteins, and equine p-tau181 is no exception. It tends to aggregate and form neurofibrillary tangles within the neural tissues of afflicted horses.

These neurofibrillary tangles, reminiscent of those observed in human neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, are a pathological hallmark of various equine neurodegenerative conditions. The accumulation of p-tau181 in neurofibrillary tangles contributes to progressive neuronal dysfunction, ultimately manifesting as clinical signs in conditions like equine neuroaxonal dystrophy (eNAD) and specific encephalopathies.
