    Target/Biomarker Information

Equine p-tau413 represents a specific subset of tau proteins intricately involved in the neurological landscape of horses. These phosphorylated tau variants are primarily localized within the central nervous system (CNS) of equines, where they play a vital role in maintaining the structural stability of neuronal microtubules.

Structurally, tau proteins like p-tau413 belong to the tau protein family, sharing genetic and functional homology with their counterparts in other species, including humans. Under normal circumstances, tau proteins bind to microtubules and aid in their assembly, ensuring proper neuronal function, axonal transport, and synaptic communication.

However, in the context of neurodegenerative disorders observed in horses, tau proteins like p-tau413 undergo abnormal phosphorylation. This post-translational modification results in tau proteins adopting atypical conformations, rendering them prone to aggregation. The aggregation of tau proteins culminates in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles within neurons. These tangles disrupt axonal transport, impair synaptic function, and eventually result in neuronal dysfunction and death. The presence of elevated levels of p-tau413 is indicative of these pathological tau modifications and the potential development of neurodegenerative diseases in horses.
