Target/Biomarker Information
Feline p-tau212 and p-tau214, constituents of the tau protein family, represent a captivating facet of feline neurobiology. These phosphorylated tau variants are specifically tailored to the intricate neural landscape of cats, playing a pivotal role in maintaining neuronal stability and axonal integrity. However, the story of p-tau212 and p-tau214 takes a dramatic turn in the context of neurodegenerative diseases in felines.
At its core, tau is a microtubule-associated protein that binds to and stabilizes microtubules within neurons. This function is vital for maintaining the structural integrity of neurons and facilitating essential processes such as axonal transport. Tau phosphorylation, a naturally occurring process, regulates its interaction with microtubules. However, when tau becomes hyperphosphorylated, as observed in neurodegenerative conditions, it undergoes a transformation that renders it dysfunctional.
Feline p-tau212 and p-tau214 are two specific sites of phosphorylation on the tau protein that hold a particular clinical significance in cats. These phosphorylated forms are notorious for their propensity to form aggregates and insoluble structures, known as neurofibrillary tangles. These tangles wreak havoc within feline neurons, disrupting axonal transport, and impairing neuronal function. The consequence is the gradual but relentless cognitive decline observed in aging cats and those affected by conditions like feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome (FCDS).
