    Pathogen

Porcine Rotavirus C (PRCV) is a viral pathogen that primarily infects pigs. It belongs to the Reoviridae family, which comprises non-enveloped double-stranded RNA viruses with characteristic segmented genomes. PRCV has been reported worldwide and has been associated with various clinical manifestations, including diarrhea, respiratory disease, and reproductive failure, particularly in piglets.

The genome of PRCV consists of 11 segments of double-stranded RNA, which encode for a total of twelve proteins. Among these proteins, six are structural proteins, namely VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4, VP6, and VP7, while the other six are non-structural proteins, namely NSP1, NSP2, NSP3, NSP4, NSP5, and NSP6. The non-structural proteins are involved in the replication and transcription of the viral genome, while the structural proteins form the virion structure.

The VP6 protein has been identified as a highly conserved protein among rotaviruses and is used as the basis for Rotavirus classification. In contrast, VP7 is known to induce the production of neutralizing antibodies against PRCV. Therefore, these two proteins have been identified as major targets for developing diagnostic tools due to their high immunogenicity.

Diagnostic methods for PRCV include enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). ELISA can detect anti-PRCV antibodies in serum or plasma samples of infected animals, while PCR and RT-PCR can detect the presence of viral RNA in feces or tissue samples. Recent studies have shown that real-time RT-PCR assays using SYBR Green and TaqMan probes are more sensitive and specific than conventional PCR and are therefore considered the gold standard for diagnosing PRCV infection.

PRCV can cause enteritis with mild to severe diarrhea in piglets and respiratory infections in younger pigs. However, clinical signs are often nonspecific and can be attributed to other pathogens, making the diagnosis of PRCV challenging. Therefore, laboratory testing is essential to confirm the infection of PRCV. In addition, co-infections with other viruses such as Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) and Porcine Respiratory Coronavirus (PRCV) have been reported and can exacerbate disease severity.

Prevention and control of PRCV require implementing appropriate biosecurity measures, vaccination, and treatment of affected animals. Several commercial vaccines are available for the prevention of PRCV infection, including live-attenuated vaccines and inactivated vaccines. However, the efficacy of these vaccines varies, with some studies showing only partial protection against PRCV. Therefore, a combination of vaccination and improved management practices may be needed to control the spread of PRCV.

In conclusion, PRCV is an important viral pathogen that affects the pig farming industry worldwide. Diagnosing PRCV infection accurately through sensitive and specific diagnostic methods is crucial for managing the infection. The development of effective vaccines and improved biosecurity measures can aid in preventing or mitigating the spread of PRCV and reducing its impact on animal health and welfare.
