    Pathogen

Feline Herpesvirus (FHV), also known as Feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), is a herpesvirus that primarily infects domestic cats. This virus is considered ubiquitous in the feline population worldwide, with a prevalence rate of up to 97% in some populations.

FHV is an enveloped virus that displays an icosahedral capsid symmetry. Its genome is double-stranded DNA, with a length of approximately 175,000 base pairs. Like other herpesviruses, FHV has a complex replication cycle that involves both lytic and latent phases.

The main gene of FHV is the glycoprotein gB, which forms one of the major components of the viral envelope. The glycoprotein gB is essential for the virus's entry into host cells, cell-to-cell spread, and syncytial formation. Another important protein produced by FHV is the DNA polymerase, which is encoded by the UL30 gene. The DNA polymerase is responsible for the replication of the virus.

FHV primarily infects domestic cats and can cause respiratory tract infections, conjunctivitis, keratitis, stomatitis, pneumonia, and systemic infections. The severity of the clinical signs depends on the age and immune status of the infected cat. In adult cats, upper respiratory tract infections are the most common presentation. On the other hand, kittens and immunocompromised cats may develop severe clinical signs such as pneumonia.

Diagnosis of FHV infection is generally based on clinical signs, virus isolation, and detection of viral DNA or antibodies. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) are diagnostic methods utilized to detect FHV. These methods target genes such as glycoprotein B (gB) and thymidine kinase (TK) that are specific to FHV. The PCR assay can detect FHV DNA in various clinical specimens, including nasal swabs, conjunctival swabs, and respiratory secretions. Meanwhile, the ELISA method measures antibodies against FHV in the serum or ocular fluids of cats.

Treatment of FHV infection is generally supportive and aimed at alleviating the clinical signs. Antiviral drugs such as famciclovir and cidofovir have been used in some cases, but their efficacy remains controversial. Some immunomodulatory agents, such as interferon-alpha, have also been employed to enhance the immune response of infected cats.

In conclusion, Feline Herpesvirus is a common viral pathogen of domestic cats that can cause respiratory and ocular disease, among other clinical presentations. Diagnosis involves a combination of clinical signs, virus isolation, and detection of viral DNA or antibodies. While treatment is primarily supportive, further research is necessary to develop more effective antiviral drugs.
